Analysis of the importance and potential of foundation-owned companies

A new analysis shows that foundation-owned companies play a central role in the Danish economy, contributing jobs, innovation, research and significant tax revenues.

Danish foundation-owned companies generate DKK 413 billion in value annually, support around 212,000 jobs and contribute approximately DKK 115 billion to public finances. At the same time, they perform strongly in areas such as capital structure, innovation and long-term value creation, while helping to retain jobs, headquarters and decision-making power in Denmark.

The analysis, conducted by Bridge Consulting and HBS Economics on behalf of the Lundbeck Foundation and the Carlsberg Foundation, also highlights the important role foundation-owned companies play in research and development in Denmark. Despite the documented strengths of the model, foundation ownership remains an ownership structure that relatively few business owners consider when planning succession. This is partly due to limited awareness of the model and of the opportunities to combine foundation ownership with other forms of ownership.
